Monopoly Deal The Right Way to Play

Introduction

In this blog, we will discuss the correct way to play Monopoly Deal, a card game played among 2-5 players. The game consists of three types of cards: Money cards, Action cards, and Property cards.

Property cards are further divided into Basic Property cards and Wild Property cards. By successfully playing cards, each player builds sets of properties, while keeping the remaining cards in the center. The youngest player starts the game, and from there, the game continues in a clockwise direction.

Game Setup

Game Setup

To start the game, the first player must pick two cards from the center pile. After that, the player can play their cards up to three times, but if they choose not to play a card, it becomes the next player’s turn. The method of playing cards is also quite interesting. In this game, each player can play their cards at three locations: the Bank area, the Collection area, and the Discard File area.

The Bank and Collection areas are personal to each player, while the Discard File area is common. Players must keep their cards hidden in their hands, but they can reveal the Bank and Collection cards to other players. However, the Bank and Collection cards must be placed in the player’s own Play Zone. In order to win the game, a player must collect three Property sets. The player who collects the first three Property sets becomes the winner of the game.

Card Types

Let’s take a closer look at the different types of cards in the game:

Card Types
  1. Rule cards: These cards can be given to each player. The youngest player starts their turn by drawing two cards from the pile.
  2. Money cards: In their turn, players can pick up money cards from the Pay Area and place them in their Bank area or Collection area. Money cards are essential for paying rent or purchasing properties from other players.
  3. Property cards: Players can collect Property cards and create sets. These cards are played in the Collection area. Property cards are divided into Basic Property cards and Wild Property cards. Basic Property cards have a single color, while Wild Property cards have two colors. By using a Wild Property card, a player can complete a set by combining properties of different colors.
  4. Action cards: These cards are played in the Discard File area. They allow players to take different actions, such as collecting rent from other players, forcing a player to give them a property, or swapping a property with another player.

Gameplay Example

Now, let’s look at an example of gameplay:

In the first turn, the youngest player picks up two cards from the Pay Area and plays a $1 million card in their Bank area and a green color Property card in their Collection area. In the next turn, the player does not play any cards, and it becomes the next player’s turn. The method of playing cards is the same for all players.

Gameplay Example

Each player has three locations to play their cards: the Bank area, the Collection area, and the Discard File area. The Bank and Collection cards are placed in the player’s own areas, while the Discard File area is common. Players can hide their cards in their hands, but they must reveal the Bank and Collection cards when playing in the Play Zone. To win the game, each player must collect three Property sets. The player who collects the first three Property sets becomes the winner of the game.
